As part of the Optum Insight Life Sciences Data Development and Enrichment Team, the Principal Data Analyst will identify, vet, and develop existing and new data products for Optum Life Sciences that both address critical unmet needs and advance Optum Life Science’s market position. In this role, the resource will receive the guidance form the product leaders proactively and reactively identifying top areas of opportunity for Life Sciences clients based on market trends and the competitive landscape. For existing data and/or targeted new product opportunities, this resource will support the work to develop the data product concept working with a cross-functional team including Finance, Operations, Technology, Marketing, and Sales. This work entails designing and building scalable data products with clearly defined requirements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the management and manipulation of mostly structured data, with a focus on building business intelligence tools, conducting analysis to distinguish patterns and recognize trends, performing normalization operations and assuring data quality
  • Develop and write efficient and optimized queries to create end-user reports and extract data from source systems and instruct analytic team members on their use
  • Lead consultations with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and determine study requirements. This includes identifying viable technological solutions/options
  • Apply and maintain knowledge of study/research designs for meeting customer business needs, particularly those for population health, equity and efficacy studies
  • Write and develop the detailed specifications/record layouts and/or workflow diagrams from which reports and extracts will be created
  • Perform necessary procedures to ensure the safety of information systems assets and to protect systems from intentional or inadvertent access or destruction
  • Contribute to the continuous evaluation of data quality, and efficiencies of analytic business processes
  • Create specifications to bring data into a common structure, creating product specifications and models, developing data solutions to support analyses, performing analysis, interpreting results, developing actionable insights and presenting recommendations for use across Optum
  • Establish relationships with customers and data senders serving as a subject matter expert for clinical and claims data
  • Collaborate and support the team in creating business justification and execution for data acquisition
  • Good written and oral communication and presentation skills with experience communicating effectively with a diverse audience – across business and technology partners, including senior leadership
  • Experience working in Agile manner, writing lean user stories and requirements that drive efficient development with technology partners manner, analytical frameworks or database/ application architects and data scientists
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that supports growth and development.
  • Demonstrates full appreciation of and compliance with regulatory obligations

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience with hands-on product analysis, business analysis, technology consulting in healthcare data
  • Proven solid project management experience, delegating and leading complex projects
  • Experience developing short and long-term roadmaps and aligning to strategic direction
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without any restrictions. Proof will be required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with providing data and analytics solutions to Life Science and/or healthcare organizations
  • Healthcare experience, ideally in strategy, new product development or product marketing
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Records (EHR Data), NLP technologies

The salary range for this role is $106,800 to $194,200 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
