About the Job

The Director, Portfolio Strategy & Evolution (PS&E) reports to the Global Head of Portfolio Strategy & Evolution within the Specialty Care Rare Diseases Franchise. The Director, Portfolio Strategy & Evolution (PS&E) will support the Franchise’s future growth in contributing to the development the integrated Therapeutic Area Strategy (TAS) of Rare Diseases. He/she will be a core member of the Global Project Teams and provide Commercial leadership and strategic direction on pipeline products moving from pre-clinical stages through Proof of Concept and towards commercialization. He/she will also partner closely with Business Development and M&A teams and conduct commercial assessments of external opportunities. The position is based in Cambridge, MA unless otherwise agreed to by the Global Head of PS&E.

Main Responsibilities:

Contribute to TA/DA strategy development and execution

  • Work closely with other PS&E team members and the TAS core team; liaise with R/D/C/M/BD partners, Corporate Strategy, R&D Strategy, TA Heads, GBLs and GPHs. Present ad-hoc strategic assessments and recommendations to Rare Diseases Leadership.

  • Contribute to the development and articulation of the Rare Diseases TAS by conducting strategic assessments and developing scenarios and recommendations.

  • Analyze disease landscapes, identify and characterize risks and opportunities, integrate cross-functional inputs and support decision-making.

  • Support the preparation of the TAS presentation

Advance early pipeline and guide drug development with Commercial leadership

  • As a Global Project Team core member, collaborate with R&D, Medical, regulatory, CMC, HEVA and MAxP and represent NPP/Commercial on the Global Project Teams

  • Develop early commercial strategy and provide global commercial leadership to guide and optimize the development of pre-POC pipeline products

  • Lead the development of Target Product Profiles (TPP) based on thorough understanding of market dynamics and targeted differentiation and positioning

  • Develop commercial positioning and business case/forecast

  • Support milestone and phase transition decisions by contributing to the preparation and delivering presentations to governance bodies (TARC, RWG, DWG, IDCC)

Support and execute external innovation strategy in alignment with TAS

  • Partner with the BD and M&A teams (including Search & Evaluation, Transaction, Finance, Legal, M&A). Present external opportunity assessments and recommendations to Rare Diseases Leadership.

  • Lead commercial assessments including forecasting of external Business Development and M&A opportunities

  • Provide commercial insights on external assets screening and participate in the BD process from external innovation to due diligence, valuation, negotiation and integration.

  • Support investment decisions by contributing to the preparation of presentations to governance bodies (TxC, Investment Committee, Acquisition Committee)

Deliver data-driven assessments and recommendations

  • Direct integrated market analysis and competitive intelligence investigations to identify current and future trends within key disease settings and across the therapy area.

  • Generate insights to ensure data-driven assessments and informed decisions

  • Translate key insights into clear, actionable strategies

  • Develop robust commercial assumptions and forecast /business cases for internal programs and external opportunities

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MBA, MS or PhD in life science preferred

  • 7+ years of relevant biopharmaceutical industry and/or consulting experience

  • Experience in New Product Planning, Strategic Marketing; and in Rare Diseases and/or Gene Therapies is highly preferred

  • Experience in strategy, forecasting, financial valuation, market research, market access, business development or portfolio decision preferred; understanding of drug development, regulatory and access environment preferred

  • Strong scientific background, demonstrated ability to understand and translate clinical/scientific information and to engage credibly with internal and external stakeholders around scientific topics

  • Strong leadership, strategic thinking, planning, analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed environment with many cross-functional partners

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including ability to synthesize and deliver a clear overview of the strategy, opportunity and risks. Ability to prepare and deliver high quality presentations.

  • Demonstrated learning agility, driven and result-oriented; Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and effectively prioritize work with a sense of urgency

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and quickly adjust to changing priorities

  • Valid passport and ability to travel internationally approximately 20% of the time

The salary range for this position is:

$172,500.00 - $249,166.66
