The Associate Director of the Characterization team will lead a group of approximately 5 scientists, whose main mission is to support the extended characterization testing of late stage and commercial biologics (e.g. antibodies, recombinant proteins, fusion proteins, and enzymes, etc). The Characterization team is responsible for performing the activities to support the elucidation of structure, reference standard characterization, comparability, host cell protein profiling and quantitation, as well as supporting stability assessments and investigation. This position resides within the Analytical Science and Technology (AST) protein characterization group, which is part of the Global MSAT at Sanofi, Framingham, MA.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead and inspire a team of Analytical Scientists by providing both technical guidance and strategic direction, fostering innovation, scientific excellence, and alignment with organizational goals

  • Drive team growth and engagement by actively managing team member’s career development through personalized mentorship, performance feedback, training opportunities, and strategic talent planning

  • Provide impactful scientific mentorship to direct reports, guiding the design, execution, and interpretation of complex experiments to ensure the strategic alignment with project goals

  • Work with a global group of engineers and scientists and lead a team to provide timely analytical testing support of upstream, downstream processes; MSAT development and pilot-scale projects. Review data for accuracy and compliance to procedures.

  • Support analytical method transfer and analytical method qualification studies including projects for internal and external partners

  • Ensure compliance with environmental health and safety requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, employee training, documentation, equipment qualification, and data integrity.

  • Provide strategic input and direction regarding the evaluation/implementation of new analytical technologies for the characterization of biologics and relevant impurities with an emphasis on state-of-the-art methods and techniques.

  • Work independently on design and performing characterization studies, data management, investigations, technical protocol/report writing, support regulatory filings, responses to agency questions and life-cycle management for analytical activities

  • Identify potential problems and proactively suggest technical solutions based upon analytical expertise and knowledge of product/process; solve assay/analytically related process problems

  • Presenting at internal/external conferences and the preparation of high-quality publications

About You

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline with at least 7 years of relevant experience working in the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry or a Master’s Degree with at least 11 years of relevant experience.

  • Broad expertise in the characterization of proteins including biophysical techniques to assess higher order structure and mass spectrometry to support PTM analysis and primary sequence verification.

  • Proven track record of successfully leading a team.

  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions and responding to agency questions.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong problem-solving, and inter-personal skills, collaborative, and self-motivated.

The salary range for this position is:

$147,000.00 - $212,333.33
