We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join our Source Management team.

Source Management is part of the Internal Developer Platforms zone (IDP). IDP enables athena R&D developers to manage the complexity of our technology and improve their productivity while ensuring that the products they build can work across an open ecosystem.


The Team: The Source Management team is a critical part of developer experience at Athenahealth. Charged with overseeing Perforce and Bitbucket source control systems, their work is at the heart of Athenahealth’s SDLC. Not only does this team oversee the infrastructure for these critical tools, but all the supporting tooling that enables releasability and tracking of code through the software lifecycle. In this team, you will see a mix of technologies, including AWS, Jenkins, Perforce, Bitbucket, Python, Perl, server management, and more. As a Lead Member of Technical Staff, you will help lead the team and the company through best practices, stability, and great experience for our internal customers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate, unambiguous technical design specifications with appropriate detail. Lead design and development on an agile team of Engineers, a Scrum Master, a Product Owner, and Experience Designer.

  • Collaborate, mentor, and advise team members to promote productivity and effectiveness; share business and technical insights with the broader engineering and product organization.

  • Develop knowledge to act as a domain expert. Take ownership of what the team builds and oversee efforts across the team to ensure completion.

Typical Qualifications

  • 6 years of professional experience in software development.

  • Experience working in an Agile environment at an enterprise level.

  • Proficient in at least one modern programming language.

  • Hands-on experience with Source Control Management (Perforce, Bitbucket, ClearCase, etc) greatly preferred.

  • Experience with system administration in Unix/Linux.

  • Knowledge of DevOps, RESTful APIs, AWS, Jenkins and similar broad technologies is preferred.

  • Knowledge of Perl is helpful.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
