Technical Writer

Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all. We are looking for a Technical Writer to create documentation primarily for our athenaIDX athena products but also attain knowledge and cross-over with our athenaOne product. Your job will be to work collaboratively in an Agile environment with subject matter experts to document functionality in new feature guides, reference manuals, online help, and more. . .for customers who use athenaIDX. You will be part of an Agile scrum team developing functionality for beta, limited availability, and general available releases, meeting hard deadlines. But enough about us; let’s talk about you.

You are an excellent communicator and presenter with an ability to maintain poise and a sense of humor in a fast-paced environment with immovable deadlines. As a diplomat, you can work effectively with a wide array of personality types and all job levels. You demonstrate the ability to write clearly, simply, and accurately. You have a knack for quickly and creatively solving problems and a capacity to assume sole and independent responsibility for the success of various projects. You are a consummate team player with dedication to client service.

The Team: Our Technical Writing team engages closely with engineering and product teams to document functionality implemented as part of regular release schedules.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work to attain a deep knowledge of athenaIDX, particularly in the area of ambulatory revenue cycle management (billing and accounts receivable) and at least one of the athenaOne products.

  • As an athenaIDX Agile scrum team member, collaborate with scrum team members and other subject matter experts to document new athenaIDX functionality and update existing reference content by incorporating the changes.

  • Cross-train on athenaOne Release Note and O-Help writing process to ensure versatility and increase team’s ability to scale.

  • Author new content and update existing content using a component content management system (CCMS) consisting of an Astoria database and oXygen XML authoring tool.

  • Execute on all Tech Writing deliverables required for each product development milestone, e.g., Beta, Limited Availability, and General Availability.

  • Collaborate closely with other athenaIDX Tech Writers to coordinate deliverables, delivery dates, assigned responsibilities, content and tracking hygiene, and consistency of standards.

  • Ensure quality of all deliverables by working closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) from Product and Services teams on content accuracy and by testing all functionality in an environment to ensure a hands-on working knowledge of the functionality being documented – not just a theoretical understanding.

  • Identify and track all required deliverables using Jira for defects and specifications for new functionality.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing processes and deliverables.

  • Proactively seek out and foster relationships and connections across scrum teams to support cohesion and consistency throughout the user’s experience.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Computer Science, or commensurate level of professional experience.

  • 3+ years of professional experience that includes authoring process documentation, online help, reference manuals, and/or troubleshooting instructions.

  • Exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills, including group presentation and relationship building skills.

  • Knowledge of athenaIDX and athenaOne preferred.

About athenahealth

Here’s our vision: To create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

What’s unique about our locations?
From an historic, 19th century arsenal to a converted, landmark power plant, all of athenahealth’s offices were carefully chosen to represent our innovative spirit and promote the most positive and productive work environment for our teams. Our 10 offices across the United States and India — plus numerous remote employees — all work to modernize the healthcare experience, together.

Our company culture might be our best feature.
We don't take ourselves too seriously. But our work? That’s another story. athenahealth develops and implements products and services that support US healthcare: It’s our chance to create healthier futures for ourselves, for our family and friends, for everyone.

Our vibrant and talented employees — or athenistas, as we call ourselves — spark the innovation and passion needed to accomplish our goal. We continue to expand our workforce with amazing people who bring diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives at every level, and foster an environment where every athenista feels comfortable bringing their best selves to work.

Our size makes a difference, too: We are small enough that your individual contributions will stand out — but large enough to grow your career with our resources and established business stability.

Giving back is integral to our culture. Our athenaGives platform strives to support food security, expand access to high-quality healthcare for all, and support STEM education to develop providers and technologists who will provide access to high-quality healthcare for all in the future. As part of the evolution of athenahealth’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, we’ve selected nonprofit partners that align with our purpose and let us foster long-term partnerships for charitable giving, employee volunteerism, insight sharing, collaboration, and cross-team engagement.

What can we do for you?
Along with health and financial benefits, athenistas enjoy perks specific to each location, including commuter support, employee assistance programs, tuition assistance, employee resource groups, and collaborative workspaces — some offices even welcome dogs.

In addition to our traditional benefits and perks, we sponsor events throughout the year, including book clubs, external speakers, and hackathons. And we provide athenistas with a company culture based on learning, the support of an engaged team, and an inclusive environment where all employees are valued.

We also encourage a better work-life balance for athenistas with our flexibility. While we know in-office collaboration is critical to our vision, we recognize that not all work needs to be done within an office environment, full-time. With consistent communication and digital collaboration tools, athenahealth enables employees to find a balance that feels fulfilling and productive for each individual situation.
